Senior Living Dining with Menifee Senior Living’s Chef Matthew
Chef Matthew began his career in professional kitchens in 2010, starting as a dishwasher and prep cook. He shares, “From day one, I was eager to learn, and I took every opportunity to absorb knowledge from the chefs and colleagues I worked under. Each kitchen I worked in taught me something new whether it was technique, leadership, or how to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Over the years, I steadily moved through the ranks by staying focused, adaptable, and committed to the craft. In 2017, I relocated to our community, primarily because of its convenient location, but it quickly became more than just a practical move, it has become home both professionally and personally. Since joining the team here, I have continued to grow and take on new responsibilities, eventually stepping into the Director role. I am grateful for the team, community, and the residents that have supported me along the way.”
Interview with Chef Matthew
How long have you been working in senior living dining?
I have been working in senior living since March of 2017.
What inspired you to pursue a career as a chef?
One of the early inspirations that led me to become a chef was watching how food brought people together. Growing up, meals were always a central part of fa
mily life, simple dishes made with care, shared around the table. I saw how much joy and connection could come from something as basic as a home-cooked meal, and that stuck with me. When I started working in kitchens in 2010, it quickly clicked that this was more than just a job, it was a craft. I was drawn to the pace, the pressure, and the constant learning. But more than anything, I loved the sense of purpose that came from feeding people and being part of a team that worked hard every day to make that happen. Over time, what began as
curiosity turned into a real commitment to the industry. Each step forward, whether it was mastering a new technique or mentoring someone else, only deepened my appreciation for the work.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of being a Food Service Director in senior living is knowing that the work I do every day directly impacts the health, comfort, and happiness of our residents.
Is there a dish that holds special meaning for you?
A dish that holds special meaning for me would be our clam chowder soup. We have had a tradition of making clam chowder every Friday for as long as I can remember and have always found a way to improve it week after week. The residents and staff look forward to ordering a bowl of soup on Fridays. It is fun to hear which week had the best clam chowder and if the next week will take the number one place.

How do you plan to learn residents’ favorite meals and preferences?
I believe in the value of our weekly resident menu chat meetings, where residents can voice their opinions and even suggest menu ideas. This helps create a sense of involvement and ownership, and it ensures that the dining program reflects the tastes and traditions of the people we serve.
What role do you believe food plays in making residents feel at home?
Food plays a powerful role in helping residents feel at home. It is one of the most familiar and comforting parts of daily life. For many residents, meals are more than just nutrition. They are tied to memories, traditions, and personal identity. A favorite dish can bring back a sense of family, culture, or a moment from the past that brings joy and comfort.
What is one unique skill or talent you bring to the kitchen that residents might not expect?
One unique skill I bring to the kitchen that residents might not expect is my ability to adapt recipes to meet diverse dietary needs without sacrificing flavor.
Can you share a favorite memory or moment you have had while cooking for residents?
I used to frequently make peanut butter pie, a recipe of my own, for our residents and it was always a hit. One day, after serving it as usual, I received a handwritten note signed by over 15 residents. It was a thank you message, and they proudly called themselves my “Peanut Butter Pie Fan Club.”
